Fractional Non-Ablative Laser

What is a Fractional Non-Ablative Laser treatment?

Fractional Non-Ablative Laser skin resurfacing is a relatively new method that is used to treat a number of skin conditions with minimal downtime. One of the premier fractional lasers is the Palomar 1540, a non-ablative erbium laser. This laser delivers light to the skin through an array of high precision microbeams that penetrate the skin deep into the dermis. This creates narrow, deep columns of skin coagulation, surrounded by healthy, untreated skin. This causes the skin to repair itself by replacing old, sun damaged skin with new, younger, healthier skin. Since the 1540 fractional delivers fractionated light, the treatments are safer and produce consistent results.

What does the Fractional Non-Ablative Laser treat?

Fractional skin resurfacing helps restore your skin’s beauty by treating mild to moderate wrinkles, scars, melasma, stretch marks, texture irregularities as well as red and brown spots.

What can I expect during a Fractional Non-Ablative Laser treatment?

The skin is first cleansed to prepare it for treatment and a topical numbing agent is applied to minimize discomfort. During treatment, the laser handpiece is applied directly to the skin. The sensation of light is sometimes uncomfortable and may feel like a moderate to severe pinprick or flash of heat.

During the first 24 hours after treatment, the skin may feel mildly sunburned, sensitive, and somewhat swollen. Since the treatments are non-ablative and the skin surface is intact, there is no oozing from the skin. Over the next few days, the skin may appear slightly bronzed, which can be easily covered with makeup. There may be some flaking as well, which can be improved by using a moisturizer.

How long does a treatment last?

Treatments can be performed in less than one hour depending on the size of the treatment area.

What are the risks and complications

Common side effects include temporary redness (erythema) or a mild “sunburn” effect that may last for several days or as little as a few hours. Other potential side effects include crusting, irritation, itching, pain, bumps, scabbing, selling (edema), broken capillaries, bronzing and acne or herpetic breakouts, There is also a risk of resulting unsatisfactory appearance and failure to achieve the desired result.

How do I prepare for my treatment

  • You should avoid sun exposure for 3-4 weeks before and after the treatment.
  • Avoid self/fake tanner sprays and lotions for 3-4 weeks before treatments.
  • Avoid the use of retinols, Hydroquinone, and Glycolic or Salicylic products for 3 days prior to treatment.
  • Avoid using photosensitizing medications for 2 weeks prior to treatment.
  • Avoid use of accutane for 12 months prior to treatment.

How many treatments will I need?

Typically a series of 4 treatments is recommended, depending upon your area of correction or concern. Dr. Mehr will ultimately determine a treatment schedule based on your individual goals and desires.

Treatments are usually spaced in 2-4 week intervals.
