Fillers & Injectables

Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers are injected into the skin to correct both deep and more superficial facial lines and furrows. The different filler options are based upon the depth of correction desired, and are excellent options for facial augmentation. The fillers we use in our practice are predominantly Juvederm Ultra, Juvederm Ultra Plus, and Voluma, which are all hyaluronic acid.

Small quantities of the desired filler, chosen by our Board-Certified Dermatologist, are injected through very fine needles into the skin. This filler not only softens the patients’ fine lines and wrinkles, but it also boosts the skin’s own production of hyaluronic acid for continued improvement of facial aesthetics. Depending on how many lines are treated, the treatments usually take anywhere from 10 minutes to one hour, with minimal patient discomfort. All of the products used in our office contain local anesthetics and are very tolerable, even to the most squeamish patient!

The effects of the injectables are best maintained by small “touch-up” visits, usually once to twice a year.

What are dermal fillers?

As mentioned, the fillers we use in our office are predominately hyaluronic acid – which is a natural substance found in the body that hydrates the skin by attracting waters and thereby acts as a cushioning agent to lift the skin. It is a jelly-like substance that fills the space between the collagen and elastin fibers in our skin.

Over time, our body’s own hyaluronic acid becomes degraded and destroyed, either through the natural process of aging or through exposure to environmental factors such as sunlight and pollutants.

Over the past 30 years, synthetic forms of hyaluronic acid have been developed and used to correct many medical disorders in many fields in medicine, and are a safe and excellent choice for the treatment of fine lines, furrows, lip augmentation, cheek augmentation, non-surgical nose jobs, and hand rejuvenation.

Where can dermal fillers be used?

Fillers can be used in the correction of facial lines and features:

  • Frown lines that run between the eyebrows (aka “glabellar lines”)
  • Vertical lines around the mouth (aka “smokers lines”)
  • To correct a “down-turned” smile (aka “marionette lines”)
  • Lines across the forehead (aka “worry lines”)
  • Lines around the eyes (aka “crow’s feet”)
  • Deep smile lines (aka “nasolabial folds”)
  • Dark circles around eyes (aka “cheek augmentation”)
  • Redefining lip borders & volume (aka “Lip rejuvenation”)
  • Correction of pitted Acne Scars
  • Correction of some Facial Scars

What is a typical treatment like?

  1. You & Dr. Mehr discuss your concerns
  2. Face is thoroughly cleansed
  3. The treatment area is cleansed with an antiseptic
  4. A topical anesthetic may be used to numb the treatment area prior to injection if desired by patient. If so, expect to come in 15 minutes prior to your appointment time to numb
  5. Several tiny injections with a very fine needle are made
  6. Immediately or within a few hours after injecting the site may be red and swollen this usually disappears within one week.
  7. We ask that you follow up in 2 weeks to achieve the desired correction

Am I a suitable candidate for filler / Juvederm / voluma?

Almost everyone is a suitable candidate for treatment with hyaluronic acid because hyaluronic acid is chemically identical between all species, and thus allergy to it is very rare.

How long does Juvederm last?

Just like natural hyaluronic acid, synthetic hyaluronic acid, or Filler (Juvederm Ultra, Juvederm Ultra Plus, Voluma) will gradually break down and be absorbed by the body once it is injected into the skin. In most cases, the augmentation usually lasts anywhere between 6-12 months. To maintain the initial results, repeat treatments will be necessary. Most people have 2 treatments per year.

What are the side effects of Juvederm / Voluma?

Fillers such as Juvederm Ultra, Juvederm Ultra Plus and Voluma are usually very well tolerated. At the time of treatment most patients report minor (if any) discomfort. This is minimized in our office by the use of ice (and occasionally a topical anesthetic). Immediately after treatment, the treatment area may be read, swollen and tender. These minor side effects usually resolved completely within the first few days.

What are post treatment procedures?

For the first 24 hours following treatment, you should avoid strenuous exercise, excessive sun or heat, and consumption of alcoholic beverages. This minimizes the risk of temporary redness, swelling, and/or itching at the treatment sites. These temporary side effects generally resolve themselves within one week. An ice pack can be applied to the site if you experience swelling. You may apply make-up as usual.
