What is an acne scar?

Acne scars are formed when the acne erupts and the blemish becomes super inflamed. With this inflammation, the pore becomes larger, leading to a break in the dermis. The outcome leads to uneven tone and texture on areas where the acne has occurred.

Ice pick

Ice pick scars are some of the most challenging types of scar to treat. You can identify them since they have a wider opening and they narrow as it gets deeper. Typically you will find these types of scars in areas where the skin is the thinnest

Rolling

Rolling scars are the types of scars that make your skin texture look uneven or sometimes ‘bumpy’ since they tend to be more curved than other scars. Rolling scars are predominantly found in thicker areas of the skin like cheeks and around the jawline.

Boxcar

: Boxcar scars are a type of scar that usually have edges that are much sharper than other scars. Those edges go down deep into the skin, tethering and pulling down on the tissue. These types of scars are the most common scarring we see with acne patients.

Subcision

Subcision is a treatment that takes a needle and helps to break apart the tethering that is caused when an acne scar is formed. Acne scars are formed when the tissue of the skin is pulled down from the surface and creates an indentation on the skin’s surface. Once the subcision is performed, new collagen forms and allows the skin’s surface to be smooth, making the scars smoother.

Fractionated 1540 Laser(Fraxel)

Our Palomar Icon 1540 laser is one of our non-ablative fractionated resurfacing lasers. There are multiple skin conditions that this laser can treat. Anywhere from fine lines and wrinkles, “smokers lines”, melasma, enlarged pores, acne scars, skin texture, stretch marks, crepey skin and new or pre-existing scars. Most patients need 6 treatments of this laser to see optimal improvement. However some may require more depending on how deep the acne scarring is.

  • Staying out of the sun when the UV rays are at their peak (12-2pm) as any laser treatment will make your skin more photosensitive.
  • Do not wear makeup on the day of treatment.
  • No sun-tanning or self-tanners 4 weeks prior to treatment (includes spray tans, tanning lotions, tanning beds, sun exposure, etc.)
  • Some medications or supplements may increase the risk of bruising. Consult with your physician.

  • History of herpes or cold sores may require an antiviral prescription prior to treatment

As with any non-ablative resurfacing lasers, most patients have a mild-moderate ‘sunburn’ look & feel anywhere from 2-3 days. On day number 3, your skin will feel very dry, similar to a fine sandpaper like texture. Slight swelling is normal for this treatment and can last up to 5 days. This is completely normal and should subside after the 7th day. We recommend moisturizing daily to help with this process.

Ematrix Resurfacing Laser

Ematrix is one of our most popular laser options for our patients with acne scars and textural issues. Ematrix is a radiofrequency sublative laser that uses energy to penetrate deeper into the skin which means it allows for deeper penetration of the skin to better help boost your overall collagen production which results in more youthful, glowy and smoother skin! Helping to tighten pores, brighten overall dark acne scarring, and smooths out deep scars. Because of this technology, it allows a more aggressive treatment, with much less downtime.

In some cases of acne scarring, patients may require filler to deeper scars to help fill in box or ice pick scarring. Dermal fillers are injected into the scarring to help to fill in depressed areas of acne scars or stimulate the skin’s natural production of collagen. We use two different types of dermal fillers depending on what you and your physician consult which filler is best for you. Some people may need more than one treatment to achieve optimal results. Fillers can also be used in other areas of the face for recreating the face structure including cheeks, lips, chin, lower face, around the mouth, temples.
